On Saturday, March 14th, Holy Name Parish in Toronto celebrated the 100th anniversary of the dedication of its church building. The community joyfully welcomed His Eminence Frank Cardinal Leo, who celebrated the Mass of Laetare Sunday. Providentially, March 14th, 1926 was also Laetare Sunday. The joy experienced a century ago, as the first parishioners celebrated the consecration of their new church building, was also present a century later as current parishioners honoured its 100th birthday.

In his homily, Cardinal Leo pointed out how the parish community beautifully exemplifies the diversity and unity of the Catholic Church. People from various countries and cultures call the parish home, including the African Catholic Community, which has worshipped at Holy Name since 2009. Everyone came together for the celebration, and the African community added a particularly vibrant dimension to the ceremony and offertory procession.

The parishioners also came together to organize a wonderful reception in the parish hall after the Mass. Everyone was delighted to have the Cardinal join them in food and conversation. Many parishioners were excited to speak with His Eminence and to have their photo taken with him. They spoke of being moved and impressed with the Cardinal’s kindness and pastoral concern.

For 100 years, Holy Name Church has prominently stood as one of the most recognizable landmarks on Danforth Avenue. The celebration of its consecration will encourage parishioners to continue making their sacred building a beacon of Christian faith, hope, and charity on one of Toronto’s most iconic streets.
